I feel sorry for anyone trying to get OUT of London while the M1 is shut. It was the best road for those who want to get away from worst city in England. However there is always the train to enable people to get to the Best city in England ---- Manchester.

Well, if the FA weren't so ridiculous as to expect 4 teams from the North West and their fans to travel ALL the way to London for a game that shouldn't even BE at Wembley this would be less of a problem Evil or Very Mad

-Nice of you to big up Manchester there Fred btw; I love it here too Smile

Not one of our best decisions hey Mr Doodles. Let's hope they're not allowed to reinstate it!!! No No No Looks like the M1 is going to remain closed until at least tomorrow affraid

Stretch Of M1 To Stay Closed 'Until Monday'

Parts of the fire-damaged M1 could be shut until Monday, transport officials have said.

The fire broke out beneath the M1 between the M25 and North Circular Road

The closure has been an ongoing traffic nightmare for motorists since a blaze in the early hours of Friday tore through a scrapyard beneath a flyover. It left a stretch of the motorway between junctions one and four north of London shut over much of Friday and Saturday. One northbound lane was opened at 6.40pm on Saturday, but the Highways Agency said it was still investigating the impact of the damage. The closure caused disruption for tens of thousands of fans going to northwest London for the FA Cup semi-final between Manchester United and Manchester City. A Highways Agency spokesman said urgent repairs were needed before the motorway can be fully reopened.

The fire caused major disruptions on Friday

He said: "The viaduct does need to be reinforced before it can carry the weight of traffic and we are putting in supports so we can reopen the road as soon as possible. We expect it to be open by 5am on Monday."

Around 40 firefighters tackled the blaze on Friday, which broke out close to Scratchwood Services and Ellesmere Avenue in Mill Hill. A number of gas cylinders were involved and a hazard zone was set up in case they exploded in the heat. About 50 people living in properties near the scrapyard were temporarily evacuated as a precaution while the cylinders were cooled. Train lines were also shut down.

Trafficlink has warned that the motorway could remain closed "into next week". Further disruptions are expected if the motorway is not completely reopened on Sunday, when Stoke face Bolton in the second FA Cup semi-final and Liverpool travel to north Londoners Arsenal.

Minister: M1 Will Not Fully Reopen For Days

The M1 will not reopen fully for several days after a scrapyard fire under a flyover damaged the motorway just outside London.

Transport Minister Mike Penning told Sky News the M1 could be partially closed until late next week, causing further problems for motorists after a weekend of disruptions.

Two northbound lanes were expected to open this afternoon after a temporary structure was put in place to support the damaged bridge.
And it is thought two southbound lanes will be opened overnight or in the early hours of Monday morning. Mr Penning said: "The bridge has been damaged by the fire quite badly and that means we have to make sure it's safe for the motorist and safe for our workers underneath the bridge."

Five Teenagers Arrested Over M1 Chaos Blaze

Post by Guest on Wed Apr 27, 2011 7:47 pm

Five teenage boys have been arrested in connection with a blaze that closed a stretch of the M1 in both directions.

London Fire Brigade has said the fire was started deliberately

An investigation in the aftermath of the incident found that the fire had been started deliberately. The inferno, which was started nearly two weeks ago, badly damaged a bridge above a scrapyard in north London. It led to serious traffic delays for football fans and marathon runners travelling to and from the capital.

The disruption prompted the Government to order an audit of road and railways that could be at risk of industrial accidents.

The fire-damaged section only fully re-opened six days after the blaze and further closures may be needed in future for further repair work.

The youths, aged between 14 and 17, were arrested in a series of raids across Barnet and Harrow in north London this morning. They are being held in connection with the M1 blaze on April 15, as well as two other fires, Scotland Yard said. Detective Chief Inspector Mark Roycroft said: "Although we are pursuing a number of active leads into these fires we would still ask that anyone who has any information about these crimes contact Barnet police."

Evil or Very Mad Was this a teenage prank gone wrong or a deliberate act? Bearing in mind they are being held over two other arson attacks sounds like the latter
