Detectives are investigating the deaths of two teenagers found with fatal shotgun wounds in a farmhouse in the Cairngorms.

The pair – named locally as Sophie Taylor, 16, and Calum Murray, 18 – were discovered on Tuesday evening at Blairnamarrow cottage, just outside the town of Tomintoul on Speyside.

Grampian police refused to discuss the background to the shootings, but said they were not looking for any other suspects.

Detective Inspector Stewart Mackie said the scene inside the cottage was "particularly distressing".

He added: "We would like to reassure the local community that this is an isolated incident. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the two deaths are at an early stage. However, it is important to stress that we are not looking for any third party at this point."

Mackie said a firearm had been found. "We're trying to put a timeline together to establish what happened. I can't divulge any details of the people involved in the house. It's very much a sensitive situation for the families and the community."

Local sources said Taylor, a schoolgirl who worked part-time as a waitress at a local hotel, and Murray, a trainee gamekeeper who had recently moved to work on a nearby grouse moor, were in a relationship. Taylor was about to sit exams at Speyside high school in Aberlour.

There were unconfirmed reports that Murray had been upset after being jilted by Taylor, and that the shooting took place in front of two witnesses, neither of whom were injured.

Police closed off the nearby A939, between Tomintoul and Corgarff, and about 30 officers were searching the property and its surroundings.

Fiona Murdoch, a local councillor, said: "It seems like a terrible tragedy. For two young people to have died is absolutely horrendous."

An employee at the Glen Avon hotel in Tomintoul, where Taylor worked, said: "She was very popular, a lovely girl. We will all miss her very much."

The cottage is close to the hideout used by Percy Toplis, the convicted army deserter, serial criminal and suspected murderer who fled from the police in Hampshire and hid out in Tomintoul in 1920, before again running off after shooting a local constable and farmer. Toplis claimed – wrongly, say historians – to be the "monocled mutineer" made famous in the Alan Bleasdale drama about the first world war.

A family has spoken of their devastation at the loss of their "bright and bubbly" daughter who was killed in a double shooting in the Scottish Highlands.

Police activity at the Blairmarrow cottage near Tomintoul, Moray.

Sophie Taylor, 16, died after she was shot by her boyfriend, who then turned the gun on himself. He has been named locally as 18-year-old Callum Murray, a trainee gamekeeper who had been studying at North Highland College in Thurso. He was on a work experience attachment at an estate in Moray, where the shootings took place.

Sky News understands Murray shot his girlfriend after the pair were preparing to have dinner with another couple in a cottage on the estate. The property was being shared by Murray and a fellow trainee gamekeeper.

Sophie was shot inside the cottage, before the 18-year-old went outside and killed himself.

Sky News also understands that Grampian Police detectives believe Murray shot his girlfriend deliberately. However, they have declined to comment on local suggestions that Sophie had wanted to end their relationship.

Sophie's parents, David and Katie, said they were "devastated at the loss of our beautiful daughter". In in statement, they added: "(She) will be greatly missed by us, her brother and her grandparents as well as her many friends. "She was studying for her standard grades at Speyside High School and had plans to continue working towards becoming a social worker. Sophie was bright and bubbly and loved spending time with her family and friends. We are immensely proud of her. We are a close family who will miss her very much and are completely shocked to have lost her so prematurely."

That age group is extremely vulnerable when it comes to angst which can lead to suicide.

This was well established in the 80's but unfortunately nothing ever came of this research. Its a real shame.

A teenager who shot his girlfriend dead in a Highland cottage was cleaning his gun at the time.

Sky News has learned that, immediately prior to the shooting, Calum Murray had been clay-pigeon shooting with 16-year-old Sophie Taylor and another young couple. All four had gone back to a cottage on the Glenavon Estate in Moray where Calum, an 18-year-old student gamekeeper, was staying while on work experience. He was on attachment from his studies at North Highland College in Thurso. Inside the cottage, he began to clean his shotgun which was still loaded. The weapon was fired and Sophie was shot in the chest. Calum Murray then went outside and turned the gun on himself.

Calum Murray's family said he loved the outdoors

His family were too distraught to talk to the media about their loss but issued a statement through the police. They said: "Calum was a much loved and loving son, brother, grandchild, nephew and friend to many. He loved the outdoors, walking with his dogs in the hills and had shown a real flair and desire to progress with his gamekeeping. Calum was much admired both by his family and friends and we are very proud of all he had achieved. He will be loved and treasured forever." Calum was raised in the Dunecht and Tillyfourie areas and attended Westhill and Alford academies. He completed a cookery course before embarking on a career as a gamekeeper.

But in his new career, he should have known the presence of a loaded weapon indoors breaks one of the fundamental rules of game keeping. Safe practice dictates that all guns should be cleared of ammunition at the end of a shoot. Scottish Gamekeepers Association chairman Alex Hogg told Sky News: "Firearms and shotguns are part of daily working life in the game keeping profession and safety is absolutely paramount."

Sophie Taylor, 16, was shot by her boyfriend, Calum Murray

"Professional gamekeepers and other holders of firearms and shotguns have to abide by extremely strict conditions in order to secure licences. One of the most fundamental rules of safety is that you never take a loaded shotgun into a vehicle or a house."

Sophie's parents, David and Katie, said they were "devastated at the loss of our beautiful daughter". In statement, they added: "(She) will be greatly missed by us, her brother and her grandparents as well as her many friends. She was studying for her standard grades at Speyside High School and had plans to continue working towards becoming a social worker.
