Grand National Sell-Out: Best Day Since 1984

Post by Guest on Sat Apr 09, 2011 7:21 am

The sun has brought out the punters, their smiles and their wallets at Aintree and Grand National day is a sell-out for the first time since 1984.

"We're over the moon," Aintree managing director Julian Thick said. Mr Thick puts the boom down to the warm weather and jockey AP McCoy. There is also the chance of watching amateur Sam Waley-Cohen become a national treasure. The perennial champion jockey finally won the National last year at the 15th attempt, and Mr Thick said it was the best possible publicity for this year.

McCoy and Don't Push It were the subject of a massive gamble 12 months ago, its price plunging from 20-1 to 10-1 on the day of the race. Simon Clare of bookmaker Coral predicts a similar pattern this year. He forecasts a record £300m will be gambled on the day's sport, with the National taking the lion's share. History suggests bets on Don't Push It would be money down the drain, as no horse has won back to back Nationals since Red Rum nearly 40 years ago. With his hat-trick of triumphs, Red Rum did as much as any human to save the race, in a very different era. With telegenic training on the sands at Southport by the outspoken Ginger McCain, Red Rum was the horse that helped reignite the public's interest in a race, and a meeting, that was falling on hard times.

Attendances had fallen below 5,000 in the early 70s, whereas 70,000 plus will stream through the gates this year. Setting off now as Sports Personality of the Year, McCoy will also carry the hopes - and the cash - of millions. "People ask me what I see as the dangers," he said. "And there are 39 of them, plus the 30 fences."

And with sport's traditional sense of irony, there's always the chance he and Don't Push it will be foiled by Ballabriggs - trained by Ginger McCain's son Donald.

I know nothing about horse racing but I always have a little flutter on the National. Niche Market and What a Friend have caught my eye so far. One year I picked 1st, 2nd and 4th! I doubt I'll be that lucky ever again!!! affraid

Best of luck and let's hope no horses or jockey's are hurt, this race can be brutal Sad x

Haha! Wow must have won a good amount that year FtL Very Happy

It is brutal but the horses must like it or they wouldn't do it Smile

I considered Niche Market- but can't pick them all... Here's what I gone for:

State of Play- placed a couple of times in this so worth an EW.
Quinz- McCriricks pick and looked good on paper.
Silver by Nature- has been talked about, was this or Niche.
Skipper's Brig- An outsider shot, if it wins it would be v nice Smile

Good luck everyone cheers
