Mexico City earthquake: Volunteers create giant human chain spanning four blocks to rescue trapped victims

Residents have banded together across the city to free those trapped in the rubble

Rescuers, firefighters, policemen, soldiers and volunteers search for survivors in a flattened building in Mexico City

Volunteers in Mexico City have formed a human chain spanning four city blocks to rescue those trapped in the wreckage of a massive earthquake.

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit the city on Tuesday decimated more than 40 buildings, Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said. The shocks have already caused at least 225 deaths – more than half them in the capital city alone.

At the site of one collapsed apartment building, dozens of volunteers formed an assembly line to pass rubble out of the area. At another building, volunteers linked up to pass a stretcher to rescue workers.

One man, an army reservist named Manuel Mavroleon Aguayo, told the BBC he had joined a team that pulled seven bodies out of a ruined building. Only two survived.

“A huge wave of people emerged out of where they were to help with the rescue effort,” Mr Aguayo said.

At a Mexico City primary and secondary school, 21 children and four adults were killed when the building collapsed inward on itself. Rescue workers and volunteers dug tunnels through the rubble to free those trapped inside.

One volunteer, Pedro Serrano, told AP he had dug his way into a collapsed classroom.

“We saw some chairs and wooden tables,” he recalled. “The next thing we saw was a leg, and then we started to move rubble and we found a girl and two adults – a woman and a man.”

All three of them had died.

Rescue workers were able to save 11 people at the school by Wednesday afternoon, but 30 more were still unaccounted for. One young girl was saved when rescuers spotted her and yelled out to her to shake her hand if she was alive.

Elsewhere in the city, two sisters joined a chain passing water to those trapped inside a collapsed six-storey office building. Fears of gas leaks have forced many restaurants and grocery stores to remain closed, but witnesses say residents have generously shared what supplies they have.

One of the sisters, Cristina Lopez, told AP it was “human nature that drives everyone to come and help others”.

“We are young. We didn’t live through ’85,” her sister added, referencing Mexico’s deadliest earthquake to date. “But we know that it’s important to come out into the streets to help.”

In an eerie coincidence, Tuesday’s earthquake occurred on the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 quake. It also came on the heels of another, more powerful earthquake that struck the city less than two weeks before.

This latest quake was less powerful, but has already proved more fatal. Tuesday’s shocks struck closer to the capital, which is especially sensitive because it was built on the soft earth of a lake bed.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was centred around the Puebla state town of Raboso, 76 miles south-east of Mexico City.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has declared three days of national mourning to honour the victims, writing on Twitter: "Mexico shares your pain."

Foreign governments have started identifying the foreign nationals among the victims. Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said one Spanish citizen had been identified, but officials declined to give more details.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy send a telegram to Mexico on Wednesday, offering his country’s help in the recovery efforts. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also said he will send a 70-member rescue team to assist.

US President Donald Trump, taking a break from his United Nations debut, tweeted his sympathy.

“God bless the people of Mexico City,” he wrote. “We are with you and will be there for you.”

My wonderful volunteer yard helper Jose has a niece; she stayed home from her teaching job at that school that has collapsed and the body count was in the mid 80's the last he'd heard from her.  Last evening it was 30 little children dead under the buildings debris.
His niece is newly pregnant and had been suffering morning sickness so she was home; and her entire classroom was GONE!
Talk about 'FATE' ...geeze!
Watching so many of their relatives and friends uploading their FB pages with camera videos about the 7.1 earthquake and the 8.4 on the 7th of Sept.  These people have been through HELL and there are still after shocks.

Just can't imagine the fear/anguish/suffering.  And Mexico has always - ALWAYS been our #1 emergency first responder nation when ever we Americans have had a national disaster.  ALWAYS!

No doubt all the illegal Mexicans in the USA will be dashing back to Mexico to help form the human chain.Brilliant, because there would be several million of them pulling.

I'm just ignoring him ...I've been dealing with another like minded VILLAGE IDIOT over here and it just becomes WHITE NOISE after a while!

I've heard that the Mexican Gov. initialized a mandatory Earthquake training system right after the last mega quake 30 years ago and on the anniversary of that horrid event; the training session had just stopped for the day and 2 hours later this 7.1 quake hit Mexico City.
That's why so many children & adults reacted as quickly as they did; practice was working for what/where/how to flee their buildings but that school - just went down far too fast for all of the little kids to escape!

Some of the most heart-wrenching scenes played out at a three-story school building that pancaked into a pile of concrete rubble on the south side of Mexico City. Rescue workers extracted at least 25 bodies from the ruins, all but four of them children.

Five people were killed at the Mexico City campus of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, the school said in a statement. Scores more died in collapsed apartment buildings and office towers.
The quake hit on the anniversary of a 1985 temblor that killed thousands and devastated large parts of Mexico City. The epicenter was in the state of Puebla, about 80 miles southeast of the capital.

Mexican government to improve preparedness and disaster response capabilities, including public health and medical capabilities. Since 2008, the Northern Command has been closely linked with Sinaproc, Salud, Sedena and Semar to improve disaster preparedness capacities throughout Mexico in earthquake monitoring, response planning and exercises; In combating structural and forest fires; In response to radiological events; In response to hazardous materials; In flood monitoring and monitoring systems; In the mitigation and response of landslides; In urban search and rescue; In water rescue and in disaster behavioral health seminars.

Brilliant that they did that. So many times those in authority say 'lessons must be learnt' and nothing ever happens.

As for Shady, he's a bit like the little boy at school who thought it funny to keep twanging your bra strap. Annoying children grow up to be annoying adults in my experience.

Finally found the name of that volunteer rescue group "LOS TOPOS"

Post by Aspca4ever on Fri Sep 22, 2017 1:46 pm

Death toll now risen to 280.
While the 'good/decent' people in this region focus on survival and assistance to those in dire need; there are those lesser thinking humans that find OPPORTUNITY for really heinous behavior - looting & crime has started to climb!
STUPID Humans taking advantage of any given opportunity to become vile and take advantage of circumstance ...doesn't matter color/race/nationality/age/gender ...shit happens!

(CNN)Members of "Los Topos," or the moles, at times emerge from the ruins of collapsed buildings too traumatized to speak. The cries from those entombed in brick and concrete can be haunting.
"They're waiting for you, at times in agonizing pain and you're outside feeling the pressure to find them," said Rafael Lopez, a member of the volunteer Mexican rescue group since 1985.

"They beg for help. They cry. They scream. You try to get them to calm down so they can give you a reference of where to find them. Are they near stairs, a hallway?"

The group was founded after the 1985 earthquake that killed an estimated 9,500 people in and around Mexico City.
At least 280 people were killed and dozens of buildings turned into dust, Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera told CNN affiliate Foro TV.
Members pay a psychological toll

Members of Los Topos, the Mexican navy and marines and other groups have been burrowing into the ruins after the country's second major temblor in less than two weeks. Some members of Los Topos said they were on the street within an hour.

"You try to handle the victim with a lot of respect," said Ivan Barientos Salas, 35, a member since 2006.

"You try to pull them out carefully. The psychological shock hits you later."
