Big Conservative Facebook Pages Are Spreading A False Claim That Black Lives Matter Blocked Harvey Relief Efforts

Post by Sassy on Fri Sep 01, 2017 5:05 pm

Black Lives Matter Houston is actively providing relief, but a story claiming the opposite has been shared to millions of people.

A false claim that Black Lives Matter activists blocked Hurricane Harvey relief efforts has gone viral on several large conservative Facebook pages. The stories use a false headline and photo to trick readers into clicking through to a story that has nothing to do with Black Lives Matter.

The two false articles, from Mr. Conservative and Conservative Post, have identical headlines and use an image taken in 2015 in Boston as their thumbnail.

People who click through are presented with an article that reports on a real protest from members of the Texas Young Democrats. They held signs and protested President Trump when he arrived in Austin, Texas to show support for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

As of this writing, the stories had racked up more than 120,000 shares, reactions, and comments on Facebook after being shared by more than 10 pages that collectively have more than 12 million fans.

At some point after a tweet from a BuzzFeed News reporter about the fake story went viral, Mr. Conservative website removed all of its content. But that didn't stop Conservative Post form publishing a copycat article the same day.
Meanwhile, the reality is that Black Lives Matter Houston has been active in relief efforts by collecting food for shelters, gathering school supplies for kids who start classes soon, and bringing food and supplies to families and individuals.

This is actually the second wave of false stories claiming that BLM interfered with Harvey relief efforts. Days earlier, OurLandOfTheFree.com published a completely false story with the same claim. That site claims to be satirical and discloses on its homepage that all of its stories are fake.

The site is run by a Maine man named Christopher Lyman who goes by the online handle Busta Troll. He is a self-described liberal trolll who says his goal is to trick conservatives with fake stories. His fake story used a photo taken last year in Atlanta during a BLM protest.
After his story went live, a group of other websites, likely run by people in Eastern Europe, quickly copied it, according to Snopes.

BuzzFeed News reported on this pattern of publishers in Macedonia, Kosovo, and the Republic of Georgia copying Lyman's stories earlier this year.
So, to recap: Black Lives Matter is helping with relief efforts in Houston, and the stories claiming otherwise were created by hoaxsters and hyperpartisan publishers to make money and create confusion.

So much insanity and far too many lesser thinking SHEEPLE HUMANS that just become 'PACK FOLLOWERS' and set aside their ability to question & read.  The quest for Truth & Facts in this media saturated age has allowed this to become the #1 problem. IMO
And it's garnered the largest moron with this low bar morality problem to find his base and ride that wave all the way right into the oval office.
If it wasn't bad enough that those moron's were getting all wrought up about those faked images there's the ones about Barrack Obama & Michelle and what they were doing during Katrina - long before he was even the POTUS - when he was just a new Senator.  Yipper, those same lame - pack followers kept tweeting about these > > >

Just chalk these up to continued PROOF that much like trying to eradicate terroristic thoughts and evil doers ...you can't wipe out STUPIDITY/RACIST/and pure ugly thinking humans. Suspect

Crazy isn't it. The fact that they don't even realise Bush was President during Katrina shows just how stupid they are.

Along the same lines, Hasbara and Alt Right trolls (seems we have one on the NF site) are spreading lies about others as well.

Activist Linda Sarsour Attacked for Trying to Help Hurricane Harvey Victims

Even by the hair-trigger standards of what’s considered offensive on social media, the tweet sent by activist Linda Sarsour on Monday evening was benign, a plea for her 231,000 followers to donate to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. The tweet included a link to a web page for the Hurricane Harvey Community Relief Fund.

Almost immediately, however, Sarsour became the target of attacks by political opponents who accused her of funneling relief money to a leftist political organization. The outrage spread from Twitter to conservative outlets like The Daily Caller and National Review, whose Alexandra DeSanctis branded Sarsour a heartless dissembler “unable to pass up any opportunity to make a quick buck.”

The criticism stems from the fact that the Hurricane Harvey Community Relief Fund is being administered by the Texas Organizing Project Education Fund, which is part of the Texas Organizing Project, a grassroots organization with a progressive mission. TOP was profiled in a recent Harper’s article about the growing liberal constituency in Texas, with Alexander Cockburn describing the group as engaging in “doorstep canvassing, intense research on policy and strategy, and mobilizing voter turnout among people customarily neglected by the powers that be.” Cockburn also noted that in the wake of Hurricane Ike, TOP helped rebuild housing in poorer parts of Houston.

The near-instant criticism of Sarsour is evidence of her growing status as a favorite target of the right. One of the co-organizers of the Women’s March on Washington, D.C., that followed the inauguration of President Trump, she is also a vociferous Arab-American activist who wears the hijab. Yet much like the president she so regularly criticizes, Sarsour can engender controversies of her own, as when she branded CNN’s Jake Tapper an ally of the “alt-right.”

When I spoke to Sarsour on Thursday, she seemed stunned that her call for philanthropy was being misconstrued. Months of right-wing attacks have exasperated her. “I have highlighted numerous relief organizations to support during this devastation in Texas and all can be found on my various social media platforms,” Sarsour told me in a subsequent email. “To be clear, I am not affiliated with TOP in any capacity.”

Some of the coverage of Sarsour and TOP has focused on her criticism of the Red Cross on social media. But that criticism is not unusual, or new. Earlier this week, Richard Gonzales of NPR pointed out that “the Red Cross doesn't make clear what percentage of their dollars will go directly to helping the victims of the storm,” making some wary of giving donations to that organization.

Melanie Ulle, the founder and chief executive of Philanthropy Expert, a Denver-based consultancy, told me she doesn’t think that “Sarsour is being deceptive,” calling her a “real community leader [who] has been in sync with the pulse of our nation in many ways.” However, Ulle added that in philanthropy, “timing is everything,” and that Sarsour may have “missed the mark” by directing people to an organization whose motives could be interpreted as political. “This week, the donors I advise are more likely to invest in the acute needs of those affected by Hurricane Harvey, such as food water and shelter, than community organizing or political activism,” Ulle said.

Ginny Goodman, one of the founders of TOP, strongly disputed the accusation that the Hurricane Harvey Community Relief Fund is engaging in political work. She noted that while the fund is being housed by the TOP Education Fund, it is disbursing money to many local organizations that know Houston and its communities better than national groups.

“The money is being spent on immediate needs,” Goodman said, including groceries, cleaning supplies and rebuilding materials. She lambasted critics on the right for what she called “un-American” attacks on her organization. “I don't think they care about the people most in need—the people we care about.”

I asked Goodman if she would, for example, use any of the funds donated through the Hurricane Harvey Community Relief Fund to fund an opponent to Texas Governor Greg Abbott, an ally of President Trump.

Goodman paused for a long while. “Is this,” she wondered, “a serious question?”

Amazing how some people will hash out lies without actually checking and believe every bit of Hasbara shit churned out by the likes of the Gatestone Institue and Jewishpress.

The deeply ingrained racist hate that has been opened like 'Pandora's Box', has shown it can even over flow onto those rapid responders groups that had their doors open and ready to take in Houston needy Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday and are still working to feed/shelter those humans and those were the Mosques in Houston.  While the Mega-Million Dollar Church of Joel Olsteens was locked tight with a sign telling them CLOSED 'DUE TO HURRICANE' Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon!  It wasn't until he got 'hammered' by FB & twitter by his own parishioners that were filming the wet but non-flooded parking lot - the locked doors and the hyperbole of his LIES for going on his own TWITTER account to state 'the church had to close due to the area flooding!'
Well that created a plethora of media moments on all of the talk shows with Joel clarifying 'what really happened' ...more lies to cover his lies.  And meanwhile the decent people {Muuuuuslims} were being attacked and treated to some real ass-swipes {key board warriors} of the worst sort and warning them: don't eat that food - don't sleep in those buildings Satan will come get you - protect your children those Muuuuuslims will snatch them when you're sleeping etc., etc., etc.!!!

Of course those heinous SOB's weren't lining up to donate - make food - work - rescue - just make trouble and attack those good True Religious people that DO THEIR FAITH and don't FAKE THEIR FAITH.
