Number of council houses down 200,000 since Tories came to power

Number of council houses down 200,000 since Tories came to power.

Labour said the Government had broken its promise to replace every council home sold under Right to Buy with a new home at affordable rent.

According to official figures from the Government, there were 1,612,000 council houses in 2016 compared with 1,820,000 in 2015 – a drop of 208,000.

Labour also pointed to figures showing ministers have replaced just one in five council homes sold in the period.

Shadow Housing Minister John Healey said: “After seven years of failure the Conservatives have no plan to fix the housing crisis.

“These new government figures show that there are over 200,000 fewer council homes than when Labour left office.

“Ministers promised to replace any affordable homes sold, but they’ve broken that promise. Only one council home has been replaced for every five sold.

“The next Labour government’s new deal on housing will build 100,000 affordable homes a year for local people by getting councils building again.”

A revamp of Right to Buy came in under the Tory-Liberal Democrat coalition government in 2012.

Tory minister at the time Grant Shapps said it was his “ambition” to replace every extra Right to Buy home with a new affordable home to rent.

Social housing building from 1997 to 2008 totalled 290,750.  I don't have figures for the last 2 years of Labour's tenure. What relevance does it have to Tory broken promises?

However while Tom Copley talks specifically about council-built accommodation, we should also consider the homes built and managed by housing associations. These 'social landlords' provide affordable housing to those on low incomes, and were responsible for an increasing proportion of social house building from the early 1990s onwards. Between 1997 and 2010, some 350,000 housing association dwellings were built. If we look at both housing association homes and council houses, Labour built more affordable properties in 2009 than the Conservatives did in each year between 1987 and 1990.
