All I know, is that if the Russians, with 250,000 Troops (and at that time) almost limitless resources, can't beat the Taliban, what chance have our 10,000 Troops, with one arm tied behind their backs! Sad

I vote no. With or without western approbation, the outcome would have been the same. But it was important to remind the Soviets that they did not have a green light to just take over whatever country they felt like.

A fair point but in actuality western monies created the pre cursor to Al Qaeda unknowlingly.

No, it was correct to condemn the Soviets for invading Afghanistsn but they went there at the request of the Afghan marxist government who were fighting the Afghan rebels. But when condeming the Soviets for invading Afghanistan it was also wrong to be supplying Arms and support to the rebels (Bin Laden) to fight the government.
It's another example of the super powers deciding to wage war and support such wars but choosing someone else's country as the battleground.
