Forensic Science Service closure 'will lead to miscarriages of justice'

Post by Guest on Wed Feb 08, 2012 6:47 pm

The imminent closure of the Forensic Science Service will lead to more miscarriages of justice, according to a survey of experts in the field.

More than three quarters of the 365 British forensic scientists questioned said the closure of the service next month would cause an increase in wrongful convictions or not guilty verdicts.

Most agreed that the increased use of private forensics companies or in-house police laboratories will make the interpretation of evidence less impartial, and therefore less reliable. The majority of scientists questioned by New Scientist magazine were employees of the FSS, but the survey also included 65 people working in private or police labs.

The Forensic Science Service, a government-owned company which is the largest provider of forensic services for police and governments in England and Wales, is due to be closed in March after losing between £1 million and £2 million a month. Following its closure Britain will be the only leading power without a national forensics service, with private or police labs left to fill the void.

Peter Gill, former senior scientist at the FSS, said: "This survey is important because this is the only hard evidence we have on what is really happening (in labs). There has been a problem with obtaining information from the scientists because they are prohibited from expressing opinions in public."

Last summer a highly critical report by the Commons Science and Technology Committee accused the Home Office of failing to comprehend the impact of the decision to close the FSS and questioned whether other providers were capable of picking up the slack.

The report said the plans had been rushed through in a bid to cut public spending, and warned the decision could harm the criminal justice system and leave many cold cases unresolved.

Madness, utter utter madness. The remaining labs wont cope and the delays in processing will be so long.

It's all about cutting public spending. Some services are too important to outsource. I think the fact the we will be the only leading power without a national service is pretty telling Rolling Eyes
