Jordan promises fair trial for Abu Qatada as Theresa May returns

Post by Guest on Tue Mar 06, 2012 8:42 pm

Radical cleric Abu Qatada will be given a fair trial if he is deported to Jordan, the country's Prime Minister said as Theresa May ended a three-day visit.

The Home Secretary travelled to Jordan to gain the necessary assurances that Qatada will not face evidence obtained by torture in any trial he will face there if returned.

The Home Office refused to comment on whether the visit had been a success but Awan Khasawneh, the Jordan PM, said progress had been made. He said Qatada would get a "fair and transparent" trial if he is deported, adding: “Jordan respects the rule of law as well as human rights. It has a judicial system that ensures fair trial of anybody on Jordanian territory.”

He also refused to elaborate on what developments there had been, but "stressed the importance of continued co-ordination on this matter, in a way that respects the independence of judicial systems in Jordan and Britain."

Qatada was convicted in his absence in Jordan of terror offences and the country has said he will face a retrial if returned. But the European Court of Human Rights has said he cannot be deported while he faces the risk of being tried with evidence obtained by torture.
