Welsh voters urged not to make today a protest vote

Don’t use today’s poll to register a protest, voters are urged

WELSH voters have been urged not to use today’s referendum on full law-making powers for the Assembly as an opportunity for a protest vote.

The Yes for Wales campaign called on people unhappy with the performance of AMs to wait until the May 5 Assembly election before expressing their anger at the ballot box.

The activists made a last push yesterday as the latest poll showed a strengthening in support for an Assembly with new freedoms.

ITV’s YouGov poll showed more than six out of 10 people (61%) plan to vote ‘Yes’ with just 28% intending to say ‘No’ to the next stage in devolution. Only 12% were undecided or planning not to vote.

First Minister and Labour Leader Carwyn Jones welcomed the result but again warned against complacency.

He told the Western Mail: “This is yet another encouraging poll and all the indications ahead of today’s vote are positive. However, we are taking nothing for granted.
