Milly Dowler killer Levi Bellfield suing prison service for £30k over inmate's bathroom attack... and 'wants to buy caravan for when he's released'

The man who murdered Milly Dowler is suing the prison service for an astonishing £30,000 - after he was attacked in jail. Triple killer Levi Bellfield, 43, reportedly suffered only minor cuts and bruises after he was attacked outside a bathroom at Wakefield Prison. It comes a month after he was jailed for life for the murder of schoolgirl Milly in 2002.

Compensation: Levi Bellfield (left) murdered Milly Dowler (right) and is now claiming compensation from the Prison Service after he was attacked in jail.

The prison authorities have admitted full liability for the incident involving Levi Bellfield but a figure for compensation is yet to be agreed, said Jeremy Moore, of Carter Moore solicitors. Mr Moore said today: 'In September 2010, we were instructed to represent Mr Bellfield in relation to a personal injury claim.

'Our client was injured after the prison authorities, in breach of the duty of care which they owe to every prisoner, housed him on a wing of the prison that was unsuitable for a prisoner of his category. Subsequently, Mr Bellfield was attacked with a makeshift weapon by another prisoner causing injuries to his face and mouth. In February 2011 the prison authorities admitted full liability for this incident. A figure for compensation has yet to be agreed with the prison authorities. We would add that, as with every UK citizen, our client has a right to seek compensation for injuries resulting from a negligent act or omission as a result of which he has suffered injury. The case, contrary to reports, is not funded by Legal Aid.'

Following the minor altercation, Levi Bellfield is said to have bragged to friends about buying a holiday caravan with the payout, the Daily Mirror reported. He has also reportedly decided on a spot to keep his caravan - somewhere in the picturesque countryside of Middlesex. A source close to the killer’s family told the newspaper: 'Levi has told family exactly where he wants it spent and that is on a caravan for him and his relatives. He sincerely believes his appeals against conviction will be successful and he will get out to enjoy his freedom. He said he shouldn't have been with anyone who could have given him a slap. The attack happened just outside one of the bathrooms in the prison. Two men recognised him and knocked him about a bit. He went to hospital because he had a few cuts to his face but nothing serious. It was pretty tame.'

The claim has sparked fury as Bellfield has already cost taxpayers £4million in legal aid.

t is understood he also has his own cell with a television as well as a small cooking area. A spokesman for the Taxpayers' Alliance branded the compensation culture that had sparked the claim 'crazy'.

Lawyers for the Ministry of Justice are thought to be fighting for the right not to pay him the cash. A Prison Service spokesman said: 'We have paid no compensation to this man. The vast majority of prisoners' compensation claims are dismissed at an early stage. All claims are robustly defended and would only be settled on the basis of strong legal advice, and in order to seek the best value for the taxpayer.'

In June an Old Bailey jury found Bellfield guilty of murdering the 13-year-old schoolgirl after she walked past his home in March 2002. Milly vanished on March 21 in Station Avenue, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, while she walked home from school. Her remains were found six months later in a wood at Yateley Heath, Hampshire, 25 miles away, but the cause of death could not be determined.

'All claims are robustly defended and would only be settled on the basis of strong legal advice, and in order to seek the best value for the taxpayer.' - Prison Service spokesman

Bellfield moved his family out of their home the day after killing Milly and dumping her body in the wood.

Milly's bones were found six months later by mushroom pickers. She may have been strangled or suffocated, but it was impossible to say. Bellfield, a former wheelclamper and bouncer, went on to kill Marsha McDonnell, 19, Amelie Delagrange, 22, and to attempt to murder Kate Sheedy, 18, in 2004. All the attacks took place near bus stops on the borders of London and Surrey. There was no apparent motive except a hatred of women. Bellfield was jailed for life for those crimes in February 2008 and was told he would never be released. He was then handed another life term, for Milly's murder, to run alongside the existing jail sentence in Wakefield prison, where he spends most of the day locked in his cell.

The compensation claim is likely to distress the Dowler family, who criticised the trial as a 'truly awful experience' in which they felt they were 'on trial as much as Mr Bellfield'. Speaking after his conviction, Milly's mother Sally said: 'The length the system goes to to protect his human rights seems so unfair compared to what we as a family have had to endure.'

He can't be serious surely? Human rights? He gave up his human rights when he became a triple killer Evil or Very Mad

As for Milly's Mothers comments 'The length the system goes to to protect his human rights seems so unfair compared to what we as a family have had to endure.' I totally agree No
