Primary Teacher Admits 36 Child Sex Offences

A primary school teacher has admitted to a string of sexual offences against children in his classroom.

Nigel Leat, 50, pleaded guilty to 36 charges - including attempted child rape - during a brief hearing at Bristol Crown Court.

The offences were committed at a school in North Somerset against five girls, the youngest of whom was aged six, between September 2006 and December last year. Police discovered around 30,500 indecent photographs and 720 indecent movies in Leat's possession when he was arrested. They included one of a child aged between seven and eight involved in an indecent act with an animal.

Leat, who had a long teaching career, will be examined by a psychiatrist in the next few weeks, the court heard.

Speaking only to confirm his name and enter his pleas, Leat, of Bloomfield Road, Bristol, was remanded in custody until sentencing on June 10. Superintendent Geoff Wessell, head of public protection at Avon and Somerset Police, welcomed Leat's decision to admit the charges. "These pleas mean the children who have come to harm will not have to endure a stressful trial, reliving the moments Nigel Leat abused them and retained a hold on them," he said. "For a number of years Leat believed he had got away with these crimes, crimes that will leave his victims with both emotional and mental scars. We would like to thank the families who have come forward to police to report this abuse. Their courage and support has brought this man before the courts."

Leat admitted 23 charges of sexually assaulting a child under 13, eight of sexual assault by penetration of a child under 13 and one of attempted rape of a child under 13. He also pleaded guilty to one charge of voyeurism, one of causing or inciting a child under 13 to commit sexual activity and two of possessing child pornography.

We really have to find a better way of dealing with paedophiles, it seems that every day there is a new story in the news. Sick, evil

I started to read it FTL but cant finish it.

There are some seriously sick people in the world! When they go to school it is out with parents control, you have to trust teachers. It makes you want to keep them with you at all times

It's terrible isn't it? I hope they lock him up, throw away the keys and he gets a really tough time in prison on a daily basis

An alternative to the two half bricks would be to cut off his testicles and penis and while he watched, to feed them to a passing stray dog. He won't be abusing any kids after that. I believe in making the punishment fit the crime!.

A paedophile primary school teacher has been warned he faces a significant prison sentence after abusing dozens of young girls on school premises.

Nigel Leat, a married 51-year-old father-of-two, stared at the floor of the dock at Bristol Crown Court for three hours as prosecutors outlined his offences. He pleaded guilty to a total of 36 charges, including attempted rape, sexual assault and possessing indecent images of children. Leat was arrested in December at a school in north Somerset after one of his victims told her mother what had happened to her.

Detectives found a wealth of child abuse images on his computer, many of which he filmed at school as he assaulted girls as young as six years old. "These children had become well versed in doing what was expected of them," prosecuting counsel Simon Morgan told the court. Mr Morgan added: "He took enormous risks, he was persistent and arrogant enough to continue after warnings from people who were anxious to protect him from false accusations."

Parents and grandparents of the victims - many of them in tears - sat just feet away from Leat as details of his crimes were read to the court.

Leat was regarded by colleagues as "pleasant and caring", the court heard. But behind the carefully constructed facade he was grooming children. He showered them with gifts and made sure his pupils were never alone with other teachers so the risk of getting caught was minimised. Leat's defence counsel said his grown-up children no longer want anything to do with him and apologised to the families on his behalf.

He will be sentenced on Tuesday.
